RANGELEY LAKES SNOWMOBILE CLUB

NEWSLETTER

November 2001

RLSC Newsletter Past Issues

We have had snow on the ground three mornings since the last newsletter was written.  Maybe by next month, we can report on how many inches of snow there is on the ground!!!

Our President, Kirk Ellis, has resigned his position with the club.  Although Kirk is still very interested in the club’s well-being and plans to help out as much as he can, his new job doesn’t allow him to be at the meetings.  A new Club President will be elected at the November 10th meeting.  Thanks, Kirk, for all you have done for the club during the past two seasons.  As usual, the November meeting will be held at the Congregational Church Hall following the 6:30 PM dinner.

Clark Allen and Tim Lyons put the finishing touches on the recently completed Magalloway River  Bridge.  They hung the sign over the bridge with it’s name on it.  The Bridge was officially named “Clark’s Crossing” by vote at the October meeting.  A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on November 15th at 10:30 AM.  Everyone is welcome to attend.    The sign was made by one of our members, Mike Oulton,  from Woburn, Massachusetts.  Thanks Mike!!

Arctic Cat and Dockside Sports have joined forces to provide a ZR120 snowmobile  at minimal cost to the club for our annual raffle.  Tickets will be mailed to all members in the near future.  The drawing will be held at the annual Snowmobile Club Dance on February 23rd at Peoples Choice.  The sled will be on display at Peoples Choice and the Rangeley Inn.   Let’s sell lots of these tickets and make some money for our trail fund!!

Vince Banaitis, club secretary, Marshall Swain and Don Hayes manned the RLSC booth at the Massachusetts Snowmobile Show held at the “Big E” in Springfield, Mass.   The Club also had a booth at the Augusta, Maine Snowmobile Show.    We are doing our best to promote snowmobiling in the Rangeley area.

Memberships are coming in daily  - if you haven’t sent in your renewal yet, remember, the MSA will not be sending you the MSA newspaper if they don’t receive your renewal.   You will receive the RLSC newsletter for a couple more months and if you haven’t renewed by that time, your name will be taken off the mailing list.  It’s your membership that provides the funds for much of the cost of trail maintenance and grooming.  Without members, we could not keep the trails open.

Easy Bucks Winners at the October meeting were Eric Wilcox of Livermore, Maine and Joe Clapp of Marshfield, Massachusetts.  Neither were present so they won $50 instead of the $100 they could have won if they had been at the meeting.  Dinner was served by Linda Whitford, Pat Allen and club secretary and the home made crescent rolls would have been delicious, I’m sure, except that they landed in Linda’s driveway and never made it to the meeting.  Oh well, hopefully we’ll get to try them some other time!!!

Rangeley’s new Police Chief, Phil Weymouth, was a guest at last month’s Director’s meeting.  Being an avid snowmobiler himself, Phil stated that he is working on creating access routes for snowmobilers to get to Rangeley’s downtown businesses.    Remember, riding on streets and sidewalks is illegal, except in marked access routes and please, use caution when crossing roads and sidewalks.  We don’t want any accidents!!!!   Welcome to Rangeley,  Mr. Weymouth!!

The Regional Maine Snowmobile Association Director for Western Maine, Aleta Rioux, will be in Rangeley on November 10th to meet with our club and other clubs from the surrounding area.  All members are urged  to attend this business meeting which will be held at the Rangeley Inn at 6:30 PM.  Aleta attended one of our membership meetings last year and was very informative with updates from MSA.  She will answer any questions anyone may have.

We need volunteers to help out at Snodeo!!  If you can help, please give Gail a call at 864-9047 or Clark at 864-2039.    We need card dealers at Casino Night, we need help on Friday night and Saturday at People’s Choice.  And of course, every year we need help on the lake for the radar run.    Snodeo will be held on January 17 – 20, 2002.  Hope to see you all there!!!

If you haven’t checked out our web page lately, you should.  You’ll see pictures of the new bridge and other new information.  The page has been a great plus for the club.  Many new memberships have been received from viewers who have downloaded the membership form and mailed it in.  Linc Avery is doing a great job  updating the page.

The new clubhouse was discussed at the October meeting.  We are in the preliminary planning stages for this project.  Pauline Lyons has volunteered to be the Treasurer for the building fund.  Ideas for fundraising were presented.   A building committee needs to be formed to design the building.  Once this is done, we can obtain a materials list and ask for donations for  certain  parts of the building, such as a window or door, etc. and the donor will have his/her name put on it.  Another suggestion was to take pledges for donations that could be fulfilled over the next two years.  Any other suggestions?  We need to get going with this project.  It would be nice if we could have a clubhouse within the next two years.  Would you like to be part of the building committee or the fundraising committee?  Just contact us!!

A trail cutting party was held the weekend of October 20th.  A new trail was cut through the “Greeleys”.  This will be the ITS 89 route towards Eustis and Stratton and will replace the Quill Hill trail this year.   Thanks to all the volunteers who worked on this project.  Trail work is on going with bridges being repaired and brush cutting being done.  If you are interested in helping, please call Clark Allen or Mike Ferguson at Rev-It-Up or Larry Koob at Oquossoc Marine.  Help is always needed.

The Christmas Party will be held on December 15th at Peoples Choice.   A new chef has been employed there and I have heard good reports.   Invitations are enclosed and a RSVP is requested.   Please plan to attend!!!

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
